Good Hair Day
wednesday Advertising Day.
This one is a bit of a question mark. Although quite well drawn, I don't know who the artist is. It seems a bit too loose to be by Elmer Wexler and to sold to be by Creig Flessel. The Vitalis Ads underneath are at least candidates to be by Stan Drake.

Ordinairy Blobs
Tuesday Comic Strip Day.
Herb Garner was an American humorist and playwriter, who started out doing cartoons. At his college newpaper, he invented the Nebbishes. They were so succesful, that he managed to merchandise them as cocktail napkins and postcards and that sort of stuff. After that became a succes, he placed them as a Sunday only strip at the New York Herald Tribune and it's syndicate. He had a wuite succesful run with the strip, honing his skills as a dialogue writer. After that, he turned to playwriting and wrote amongst other things the Braodway hit A Thousand Clowns. Later, he had another hit with I'm Not Rappaport and The Goodbye People didn't do bad either. Many consider him to be on eof the great American playwrites of the sixties and onwards. For an appreciation of the movie version of A Thousand Clowns I direct you to one of my favorite blog writers, Ken Levine.

I have many of these Sundays and will be adding them over the next few months. They are a real piece of American cultural history and deserve all the attention they can get. They are also proff of my idea that in the early sixties in America it seems that anything was possible.

Ketch As Ketch Can
Monday Cartoon Day.
Some more of Hank Ketcham's excellent cartoons for Collier's. If you follow the label, you'll get to a post with all of 1948 and some additional ones from 1949 and 1950. At som point, I hope to have all of them in one big post. I especially like all the different types he draws. He did that as well in the early years of Dennis the Menace, but at some point it seems the new faces disappear. To me, chracter design was one of his stronger points. I would have loved to have seen a cartoon filled with his people.

No Secret
Sunday Meskin Measures.
In an earlier post I showed the first five stories Mort Meskin did for DC's House of Secrets. I have a coupl eore and will be adding them over the next few weeks. After getting into a rut at Prize, Meskin reinvented himself while keeping his qualities as a superb storyteller.
