Mort Rushmore

Sunday Meskin Measures.

Continuing the best of Meskin and Robinson, the first of three stories in Fighting Yank #28 from April 1949. This one looks a bit lighter and sketchyer than the others. At first, I thought George Roussos may have been involved, but it's probably just that we see the results of Meskin and Robinson's working style - Meskin doing lay-outs, Robinson inking and Meskin applying the shawdows with a brush - and Meskin being particulary rushed.

Aye-Aye, Dick!

Saturday Leftover Day.

Today Dick Ayers celebrates his 88th birthday. Best known for his work as an inker on Jack Kirby's prehero monster stories and his early superhero books as well as taking over the pencilling of Sergeant Fury and his Howling Commandoes, he worked all through the fifties for a variety of companies in a very distinguishable (almost cartoony) style. He did loads of horror and other books for Stan Lee at Atlas and created the original Ghost Rider western strip for Magazine Enterpriss. Since we celebrate the fifties here, it is appropriate to highlight an early mostly unknown gem, a series of funny filler stories for Magazine Enterprises' Daniel Boone books.

The Brain was a delightful comic book series by Dan deCarlo for Magazine Enterprizes. They have never been collected, but the are known with the fans. Les known is the fact that there were two Brain stories in a companion titl called Clubhouse Rascals. Listed in the GCD, but rarely seen.

The Price Of Admission

Thursday Story Strip Day.

Garrett Price was an immensely talented cartoonist, who also did a Sunday only newspaper strip in the thirties. White Boy ran from 1933 to 1936, changing it's name and theme towards the end to Skull Valley. If you like these, you should check out http://bibliotecadelespanto.blogspot.com/2011/02/garret-price-white-boy.html where they have about fifties more in color! These are my own, though.
